The castles and museums of the Île-de-France region miraculously escaped the destruction of the Second World War. Under what circumstances, and by what means?

This collective work, the outcome of a colloquium co-organized with the Palace of Versailles research center in 2021, takes a fresh look at the preservation work carried out by the castles and museums of the Île-de-France region between 1939 and 1946. In particular, it offers an unprecedented perspective on the role of the Germans in this undertaking, and then of the Allies. It also prompts reflection on the memory we retain of these events today.
