1725. Native American allies at the court of Louis XV

Exhibition catalogue

The book immerses us in the little-known world of the indigenous societies of the Mississippi Valley at the turn of the 18th century, just as the French were settling in this vast region they called “Louisiana.” Faced with a growing French presence, these societies had to find ways to coexist with the colonists, establishing an economic, political, and military alliance on the banks of the “great river.”

One of the most emblematic and spectacular moments of this alliance, described in detail in Le Mercure de France, was the arrival in France of Oto, Osage, Missouri, and Illinois chiefs in the fall of 1725, at the joint request of the Compagnie des Indes and the young Louis XV.

Maps of Louisiana, produced in France and America in the 18th century, allow us to rediscover the view of the New World held by the French during the Ancien Régime. A collection of artifacts made by these indigenous communities, preserved at the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac, bear witness to the interactions between the French and Native Americans. These absolutely unique artifacts are the oldest works from this region preserved in the world. Recently restored, they impress with their finesse and beauty. Today, we also have as a testimony to this visit a masterpiece of French music, Rameau’s Les Indes galantes, a ballet that left a deep impression on the imagination of the time.
