This cushion cover was inspired by the portrait of “Marie-Antoinette with the rose” by Elisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun.

The latter was one of the greatest portrait painters of her time, on a par with Quentin de La Tour and Jean-Baptiste Greuze. Born into relatively modest circumstances, she started drawing at a young age and was taught how to use painting materials by her father, who had recognised her talent. She earned a place among the high society of the kingdom and notably won the favour of the king and his family. She also became official painter to Marie-Antoinette, which led to her admission to the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture.
