This bag features the emblem of the Sun King, as seen throughout the Palace of Versailles, adorning tapestries and woodwork.

Louis XIV chose the sun as his emblem. The sun evokes Apollo, god of peace and the arts; it is also the celestial body that gives life to all things, a symbol of perfect constancy, rising and setting each day. Like the god himself, Louis XIV, a warrior hero, restored peace; he was the protector of the arts, the dispenser of all graces. Through the regularity of his labor, through his public rituals of rising and retiring, he reflected this parallel, engraved in stone. Everywhere at the Palace of Versailles, the décor intertwines Apollo’s attributes—laurels, lyre, tripod—with royal portraits and emblems.
