In 1692, François Girardon cast a 7-meter-high equestrian statue of Louis XIV in bronze for the Place Louis le Grand (now Place Vendôme). Destroyed during the French Revolution, all that remains of the statue today is a foot, preserved in the Carnavalet museum, and a reduction made during Louis XIV’s lifetime, kept in the Louvre.

This reproduction was made from a mold made in direct contact with the original work. It was then hand-patinated: all steps requiring excellence of gesture and mastery of cutting-edge techniques.

These are unique skills cultivated by the craftsmen of the Rmn-GP’s molding workshop. Stemming from the Musée du Louvre workshop, founded in 1794, it offers 6,000 references. The workshop boasts one of the world’s largest and most prestigious collections of original molds, reproductions of sculptural masterpieces from Antiquity to the present day.
