Versailles festivities

As King Louis XIV had the gardens of Versailles landscaped with fountains and bosquets, he decided to organize the first major festivities in honor of his mother Anne of Austria and Queen Maria Theresa of Austria, which were to make the Palace of Versailles famous.

The festivities, known as the “Plaisirs de l’Ile Enchantée”, lasted six days and also brought about the first collaboration, under the aegis of the king, between Molière and Lully. Hand-picked, “only” 600 people were invited: the Palace, still in its original size, could not accommodate all the guests, who lived in their carriages!

This service shows the gardens as seen from the Palace, and the shows that bring the festivities to life.
