Violette’s parents are dead. She can’t live on her own, she’s only in fourth grade. The social worker who looks after her told her that she would now go and live with her uncle, her mother’s brother. She hasn’t seen him for six or seven years, but she remembers him very well: he was old, fat and smelled. When she arrives in Versailles, she discovers that Régis-le-puant hasn’t changed, and that his house is just as horrible as he is. Violette is sure of one thing: she can’t live here.
