Dossier : The Salle du Jeu de Paume

A high place of history

The actions undertaken at the beginning of the Revolution did not all take place in Paris, as is too often imagined, but partly in Versailles. The Storming of the Bastille has thus obscured the major role played by the representatives of the people near the castle. In this respect, the oath taken in the Salle du Jeu de Paume is undoubtedly one of the major moments of our national history. Without this high place of history, formerly devoted to sports practice and recently restored, the unity displayed by the various participants would not have breathed into the revolutionary movement the strength that it did.
