Broach with the 'Complete Myology' of Gautier Dagoty

90,00

This textile broach decorated with beads is a work of the designer Lyndie Dourthe. An original piece of jewellery, it is inspired by the painting by Gautier Dagoty (1716-1785) 'Complete Myology', which gives us an insight into the state of surgery in the 18th century. This broach with its silver-plated clasp is made from cotton duck and wadding. The series is a limited edition numbered 1 to 11.

Medical science was regarded as an important priority and it developed considerably under the Bourbon kings. In 1731, Louis XV supported the founding of the Academy of Surgery, the first French institution in this field. The works of Dagoty, the first surgery treatises as well as astonishing medical instruments were exposed to the public during the exhibition Science and Curiosities at the Court of Versailles from 26 October 2010 to 27 February 2011.
