A watering-can for a young gardener

This small zinc watering-can with its ladybird pattern is an indispensable tool for all budding gardeners. Its circular rose allows them to water plants gently.

In the 17th century, the apprenticeship to become a master gardener lasted four years, followed by two years directly under a master. The future gardeners were assessed on the characteristics of the plants they looked after as well as on the aesthetic attractiveness of the garden. The final test before becoming a master gardener consisted of a display of carpentry to demonstrate that the apprentice could build trellises.
