Cup and Ball Game

An old-style game

This solid cup and ball game in hevea wood was made in the Jorelle workshops, a toy manufacturer since 1864. The cup and ball game is a traditional one consisting of launching the ball in the air so that it will fall back into the cup while using only one hand. The ball is attached to the cup by a string.

In France, king Henri III launched the fashion of the cup and ball game and the successive Courts from Louis XIV to Louis XVI kept it up. At the time, the cup and ball were very precious objects, often carved from horn, ivory and wood, inset with silver and/or gold.
