The universal symbol of the 'French formal garden', the gardens of Versailles form a fairytale plant world patterned according to a geometric and flamboyant architecture. They were laid out and orchestrated by the landscape gardener André Le Nôtre at the Sun King's behest in 1662 to provide a place of entertainment for the Court.
