The Hamlet or little village of Marie-Antoinette was built in 1783. Modelled on the one belonging to the Prince de Condé in Chantilly, Marie-Antoinette wanted a rural retreat where she could get away from the pomp of court life and live like a peasant surrounded by her ladies in waiting. She also had an English-style landscaped garden laid out for her.
