In the 18th century most chess games were won by check and checkmate. In 1736 the 10-year-old composer François-André Danican Philidor went down in chess history when he defeated the champion at Versailles in front of Louis XV. Later he did a singular analysis of chess playing in which he found that pawns have a strategic importance nobody had ever thought of before.
