Nautical Astrolabe Brooch

10,03

This silver pin depicts a nautical astrolabe, a scientific instrument used from the 16th century onward. By observing the height of heavenly bodies, this object made it possible to determine the ship's latitude. A sheet tracing the nautical astrolabe's history is enclosed.

Navigators explored the Earth in 17th and 18th centuries. In 1785 Louis XVI, who had a passionate interest in science, personally took part in planning La Pérouse's voyage, opening up an atlas and showing the explorer the route he wanted him to take on his round-the-world journey. Many scientific instruments have been exposed in "the Science and Curiosities at the Court of Versailles" exhibition.
