The fountains and basins in the gardens needed a considerable amount of water, even though Versailles is on marshy ground. A water supply system was therefore set up to meet the King’s needs. A set of pipes and underground spaces supply the fountains. They come together in a junction called the “spider” located below the Latona fountain, between the water parterres and the Grand Canal.
