Venetian eye mask, mixed materials and ribbon

30,10

This gold-coloured Venetian eye mask is made from ceramic. The mask which covers the upper part of the face is set off by red fabric and different woven braids. Black spiral scrolls highlight the eyes. It is fastened around the head with two gilt satin ribbons.

In the 17th century, the government of the Republic of Venice issued rules to limit the use of face masks and eye masks. The wearing of an eye mask was an obligation during official ceremonies and public festivities, as was the cape. However, the full face mask was used at this time as a disguise and was also used to cover up one's features when involved in reprehensible acts.
