Mat Cover

This cover was inspired by a detail of the headboard of Marie-Antoinette’s bed.
The roses and lilies brought together with a garland of cornflowers were directly inspired by the quilt project. In 1786, when Marie-Antoinette wanted to renew her summer furniture, i.e. the fabric decorating her grand chamber, the Garde-Meuble called upon an embroiderer from Lyon, Jean-François Bony, to produce bed and chair embroideries to go with the new wall hangings.
This cover shows the image on the quilt (or bedspread) which is the only original piece to have survived the French Revolution.
